Medicines at risk and in short supply🚨

The National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima) reported the shortage of nine essential medicines in Colombia, including insulin, activated charcoal and phenytoin, among others, affecting patients with chronic diseases and critical conditions. Although the number of medicines in short supply has decreased compared to the previous month, the situation remains worrying. In addition, eight other drugs, such as enalapril and valganciclovir, are at risk of shortage, which increases uncertainty for both patients and health professionals.

Invima attributes the problem to the lack of active ingredients and specific concentrations, rather than to brand or laboratory failures, but the insufficient explanations have generated criticism. Francisco Rossi, director of Invima, has been called to the Seventh Commission of the Chamber to address the crisis and his recent statements on the review of spending on high-cost medicines, which have caused unrest among patient organizations, especially those with orphan diseases. The community hopes that this appearance will be a step towards an action plan that guarantees the availability of medicines and alleviates the impact on the most vulnerable patients.
