On October 28, President Gustavo Petro announced the appointment of Germán Velásquez as director of the National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (INVIMA). Velásquez, With a solid background in philosophy and a master's degree in economics, he has two decades of experience experience at the World Health Organization (WHO), where he held the position of director of the Program of Medicines and Traditional Medicine. His appointment comes after the resignation of three directors in charge of INVIMA, generating criticism, especially due to the drug shortages, a problem that still has no definitive solution.
Germán Velásquez, born in Manizales in 1948, has been recognized with multiple doctorates Honoris Causa by prominent institutions such as the University of Caldas and the University Complutense University of Madrid. His experience also includes a management position in a laboratory American pharmacist in Indonesia in 1970 and his involvement in the South Centre, a intergovernmental organization that provides advice to 54 developing nations. According to According to Semana magazine, Velásquez has provided advisory services in Mozambique and Mali in Africa, working closely with Ministries of Health in key areas such as public health, health economics and medicines. His appointment seeks to provide a international perspective and solid experience to lead INVIMA at a critical moment for public health in Colombia.
